Magnolia Table Chocolate Chip Cookies

You Guys. The Magnolia Table cookbook is a TRUE GEM! I mean, I thought I couldn't love Chip and Joanna more, but there they went, sharing their heartwarming little kitchen adventures with us. We are blessed, my friends.

I'm seriously planning to cook my way through the whole dang thing because every recipe looks amazing. And when I first laid eyes on the beautiful pages dedicated solely to chocolate chip cookies, I knew what recipe I was gonna be trying first (the 2,535 Pinterest reviews didn't hurt either).

Okay, so the recipe itself took me off guard, mainly because of its shortage of butter. But wait, don't run away!! Joanna even admits that she surprised herself by liking these cookies with a half-dose of butter (because who doesn't love butter, really?), but decided to run with it. The recipe also omits white sugar, and calls for an extra helping of brown sugar (which adds a nice chewiness), a heaping teaspoon of baking soda (consider me intrigued), and two eggs to pull everything together and provide some extra richness.

The cookies I whipped up from Jo's recipe were super flavorful, thick, dense, and chewy. This texture is definitely due to the unique ingredient ratios, and the addition of sea salt and extra brown sugar provide that extra punch of flavor. Jo noted that she designed this recipe to make a beautiful cookie, and I'd definitely say she succeeded! They are the cutest little buttons with the perfect amount of crackling and chocolate.

I think this cookie is perfect for milk dunkers. With a smooth and crunchy exterior, it really holds its shape. It's the kind of cookie that stores well, making it great for the cookie jar (think, after school snack/middle of the night pregnancy craving). I have a theory that the crunchy, crackly exterior insulates the soft and chewy center, keeping the chocolate pools nice and melty for hours--yes, hours! I took the liberty of testing it out for myself (you're welcome).

I also added walnut pieces to half the dough, and they complimented the flavors and textures really well! I don't think most chocolate chip cookies are well suited for the addition of walnuts, but I took  a chance on this bad boy and I'm sure glad I did! Call me crazy, but I actually prefer them this way. I think I'll also sprinkle a little extra sea salt on top before baking next time, cuz I'm fancy like that.

My favorite part of this recipe is the open invitation to dump extra chocolate chips into the dough, if you feel so inclined. Thanks Jo, you know we're gonna be taking you up on that.

These are also Mia approved. You can tell by the way she smeared chocolate all over herself and my shiny white entertainment center.
